Best leather bags for travelling in style: a practical guide

Travelling changes the way we use a bag. We walk more, access the interior more often and need documents, phone and small essentials to stay easy to find. That is why the best leather bags for travel are not necessarily the largest: they balance capacity, security, lightness and comfort.

Define the bag's role during the trip

A piece used as a personal item serves a different purpose from a bag for moving around once you reach your destination. For airports or trains, a shopper or tote with more capacity may make sense; for exploring a city, a crossbody or medium format often offers greater freedom of movement.

If you travel with a suitcase, avoid duplicating functions. Your bag should concentrate what you need close at hand: documents, wallet, phone, glasses, power bank, headphones and a few personal items.

Prioritise a secure closure and easy access

In crowded places, a full zip closure can provide reassurance. Magnetic closures are quick and convenient, but it is worth considering how deep the opening is and how protected it remains. An effective design lets you reach what you need without exposing the entire interior.

An internal pocket for a passport or wallet can be more useful than many small divisions. Organisation should help rather than take away space.

Weight matters from the first kilometre

A bag may feel light for a few minutes and become uncomfortable after several hours. Check its empty weight, handle width and how the load is distributed. On a crossbody, an adjustable strap lets you change the drop and adapt it to a coat, jacket or lighter clothing.

On larger models, well-proportioned handles reduce pressure on the shoulder or hand. Size should relate to the amount you genuinely expect to carry.

The right leather for intensive use

While travelling, a bag rubs against clothes, seats and luggage. Grained or textured leather often disguises small signs of everyday wear more easily. Smooth leather can offer a cleaner appearance, although it generally requires a little more care to keep the surface looking its best.

This does not mean leather should remain unchanged. Genuine leather evolves with use and can develop its own patina. What matters is that the construction supports that ageing with firm stitching, well-finished edges and correctly resolved stress points.

Tote, shopper or crossbody?

A tote is useful when you need to carry more or pair the bag with a suitcase. A crossbody is especially practical when you want your hands free. A medium format with a short handle and long strap can be a very versatile middle ground.

If you are choosing between two types, see our guide tote or crossbody: which should you choose?.

Colours that travel well

Neutral tones make it easy to use the same bag with different outfits. Black, tan, chocolate, taupe or burgundy are highly versatile choices. If your travel wardrobe is simple, a more expressive colour can become the defining point of the look without requiring a different bag.

What to check before buying online

Check dimensions, strap length, closure type, interior layout and photographs from several angles. If you plan to carry a tablet, bottle or documents of a particular size, compare the measurements before buying. An image alone does not confirm capacity.

It is also worth looking at the base and attachment points, as these areas receive considerable stress while travelling. Quality can be seen in how the working parts have been designed, not only in what is immediately visible.

A piece made to keep travelling

CHAGOM designs and makes its bags in Ubrique, with attention to construction, proportion and finishing. The aim is not to choose a “travel bag” used only a few times a year, but a piece that can also accompany you in the city and in everyday life.
