Tote or crossbody bag: which should you choose for everyday life?

Choosing between a tote and a crossbody bag may seem like a question of style, but it mainly depends on how you move and what you need to carry. Both formats can be elegant and versatile; the difference lies in capacity, weight distribution and the freedom of movement they offer.

When to choose a tote

A tote is particularly practical when you need more capacity. A diary, documents, pouch, water bottle or even a laptop may require a broad base and an easy opening. It is a useful format for the office, commuting or days when you spend many hours away from home.

Pay attention to handle length, base structure and empty weight. A large tote invites you to fill it, so good construction should distribute the load and properly reinforce the points where the handles join the body.

When to choose a crossbody

A crossbody prioritises freedom of movement. It leaves your hands free and keeps essentials close to the body, making it especially practical for walking, travelling, running errands or moving around the city.

Its capacity is usually more contained. Before buying, ask whether you really need to carry a large volume or whether a phone, wallet, keys, glasses and a few small items cover most of your day.

Comfort and weight distribution

With a tote, weight is carried by the hand, forearm or shoulder depending on handle length. With a crossbody, a long strap distributes the load across the body or rests on one shoulder. Strap width and adjustability have a major effect on comfort.

If you tend to carry more, a bag with two carrying options can offer a useful balance: short handles for a cleaner look and a long strap for moving around.

Security and access

The wide opening of a tote makes it easy to find things, but it also makes the closure system important. A full zip adds protection; a magnet is quicker and visually cleaner. With a crossbody, having the bag close to the body already gives a sense of control, but the closure still matters.

Which format is more versatile?

There is no universal answer. If your routine revolves around work and carrying more items, you will probably get more use from a tote. If you prioritise lightness and movement, a crossbody is often a better fit. If you want one piece for very different situations, a medium format with a short handle and detachable strap can be the most flexible solution.

Proportion matters

A bag should relate to what it contains and to the way it is carried. An oversized tote can feel awkward if it is always half empty. A crossbody that is too small can force you to leave behind things you need. Compare dimensions with a bag you already use rather than relying only on photographs.

Material and construction

Whatever the format, look at the leather, stitching, edges and attachment points. In Ubrique, each of these areas forms part of a specialised sequence of work that directly affects durability and the final presence of the bag.
