Artisanal bag vs luxury bag: where the value really lies
The price of a bag can include many different things: materials, hours of making, design complexity, distribution, communication, brand recognition or exclusivity. Comparing an artisanal bag with one from a major luxury house solely by price therefore often oversimplifies the question.
A more useful question is: where does the value of the piece in front of us actually lie?
Luxury can include much more than manufacturing
Major brands build complete worlds around their products. Design, history, art direction, stores, service, campaigns and recognition are all part of the experience and can hold value for those who seek them.
That does not mean all of that value is material, nor does it need to be. A purchase can also have an emotional or symbolic dimension.
In an artisanal piece, the product takes centre stage
When we talk about artisanal leathercraft, much of the attention is focused on the piece itself: pattern making, material selection and preparation, cutting, assembly, stitching and finishing.
At CHAGOM we work from Ubrique with the intention of keeping design and making close together. That relationship allows decisions about proportion, structure and finishing to be made from the development stage of each model.
Artisanal does not automatically mean better
The word craftsmanship should not be used as an abstract guarantee of quality. There are exceptional artisanal pieces and others that are less well resolved. The same is true in luxury: some products are executed to an extraordinary standard, while others derive much of their appeal from the brand or the trend.
The comparison should be made by looking at the specific piece.
What should you look at?
Material, construction, stitching, edges, hardware, ergonomics and functionality help assess a bag beyond its name. It also matters how clearly a brand explains where and how it makes its products.
To go deeper into these details, see our guide on how to recognise a well-made piece of artisanal leathercraft.
Design is also part of the value
A well-constructed bag can still feel irrelevant if the design is not resolved. Proportion, shape, the balance between utility and presence, and the ability to fit different moments are all part of what makes a piece special.
For us, timeless does not mean neutral or anonymous. It means avoiding dependence on a single trend so that the bag can retain interest over time.
Buy less, but choose with intention
The bag that offers the most value is not always the most expensive or the most recognisable. It can be the one you use frequently, the one that ages well and the one that still makes sense after the initial excitement of the purchase.
It is therefore worth asking what we are actually looking for: belonging to the world of a particular house, discovering a specific design, valuing a place of manufacture or finding a piece that fits our own use especially well.
CHAGOM: a direct relationship between design and craft
CHAGOM was born in Ubrique and develops its collection from genuine product knowledge. Our proposal is not to imitate the language of a major luxury house, but to build an identity of our own through design, leather and craft.
